Just a few days ago, a woman in a wheelchair had a horrible experience at a bakery in Cheras, where she was asked to leave because the bakery apparently disallowed wheelchairs inside their premises.
As shared by content creator, Muhamad Harris Nasril, the woman named ELmiza GhAni explained that she was already holding the bread she wanted to buy when the bakery’s staff approached her and asked her to leave.
She wrote, “I was asked to leave even though I was already holding the bread I wanted to buy. They said that there was a (no-entry) signage in front of the shop, but it only showed a picture of a baby carriage. There was no picture of a wheelchair. They said that they’re afraid the wheels will dirty their shop, especially if there’s faeces stuck to them.”
“This is the first time this has happened to me. Even mosques allow wheelchairs inside. I wasn’t even asking for alms, I just wanted to buy some bread.”
As this incident went viral, the bakery spoke up and ultimately apologised.
Taking to their Facebook page, Syu Bakers also believes that their rule against wheelchairs is a mistake.
“Assalamualaikum and greetings to all. I, as the owner of Syu Bakers, would like to humbly apologise for what happened concerning the issue of the disabled woman in a wheelchair who wasn’t allowed into my premises and for the way my staff treated her. Yes, before entering my premises, shoes and slippers must be taken off,”
“But, it was negligent and careless of me to not allow wheelchairs into my premises. This is because, before this, there were incidents of wheelchairs and strollers entering with faeces stuck to the wheels. But, I am not as cruel as people think as my father is disabled and my mother is in a wheelchair. I am a human who doesn’t run when I make a mistake,” the owner said.
They once again apologised and thanked the public for pointing out their wrongdoing in disallowing wheelchairs into their bakery.
