Apart from electricity, water is by far the most crucial necessity for Malaysians, and the rates that we pay is one of the lowest in the world. That might change by the end of the year.
The minister of Water, Land and Natural Resources, Dr Xavier Jayakumar has announced that new rates for water tariff for all states might be announced the earliest by the end of this year. However, he mentioned that this would be discussed further with the Cabinet members first. He elaborated, as quoted by Malay Mail,
“I will only announce the tariff increase in each state after the Cabinet ministers have agreed with the new rates… maybe by the end of the year but I cannot promise anything.”
Reporters have asked whether the new tariffs will be a burden for the rakyat, which Dr Xavier ensured that they would not. He said,
“We understand the people’s situation but the people should understand that the water industry has not changed its rate for a long time and it needed larger operation capital now.”
We are sure that the new rate will not blow a hole in your pocket. However, since we will be paying more, hopefully, the number of water disruptions can be reduced, and we get better services with the increased rate.
