Malaysia is a melting pot filled with people of different races, nationalities and religions. Although we as a country tend to be very accepting of people coming to our country in search of a better life, we must ensure that our country is not being taken advantage of.
Recently, the Immigration Department shared images of an illegal Indonesian settlement in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, whose residents were believed to have no intention of returning to their country of origin but rather to remain in this country without valid documents.
In a similar case, a local wholesalers market was recently brought to the spotlight after some Malaysians claimed that it has since been overrun by Rohingyas who have come to the country to seek refuge.
In a video which has gone viral on social media, a man who was identified as the Chairman of the Penang Surplus Welfare Association, Mohd Sophian Mohd Zain, was spotted saying that the influx of Rohingyas at the Selayang wholesale market is not a new issue and has been an issue for many years.
In the video, Mohd Sophian expressed his frustrations on why the Rohingyas were able to illegally set up stalls in parking lots near the market without facing any repercussions.
He also stated that the police, the MP in charge of the constituency, as well as the immigration department have turned a blind eye to the issue and urged them to take action immediately.
In an interview with Sinar Harian, Mohd Sophian said, “What we regret is that these people seem to make this wholesale market area the original location, free to do business anywhere here including the car park area and junction.”
“Not only that, many of these people are also hired as employees for the reason that they don’t mind receiving low wages. It must be remembered that these Rohingya ethnic groups, they came to Malaysia not as workers, not traders, but they are refugees.”
Mohd Sophian said that his side is ready to cooperate in combating the influx of Rohingya people in this area.
“We are ready to go to the field if allowed, we can help show which stalls are run by Rohingyas themselves and which employ Rohingyas,” he added.
The video has since gone viral on social media as netizens tagged Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen, the police, and the immigration department in hopes of pointing their attention to the matter.
