Malaysians are currently divided after a group of elderly people were disallowed from conducting their exercise activities at a closed open-air food court in Penang.
The #UpdateInfo X page recently showcased a video of a man condemning the elderly group after they continued to conduct their exercises at the food court despite notices by the mayor being pasted there stating that the food court only allows customers to eat and drink on their premises.
#UpdateInfo wrote, “Don’t tell me there’s no field for exercising in the area that they have to do it at a food court.”
In the video, the group could be seen doing their exercises at the food court while a speaker played Chinese music.
Some of the elderly people started to walk away as the man recording showcased one of the notices by the mayor and condemned the group.
The notice by the mayor read, “This food court only allows customers to eat and drink. (They) do not allow any exercising activities, Zumba, bringing pets and other activities.”
While some Malaysians pointed out that the elderly people should follow the rules and that their music might be a bother to others in the area, others believe the elderly group should be allowed to use the food court while it’s closed and that the authorities should focus on other things such as Mat Rempits.
“If people don’t allow you to be there, then just don’t be there. It’s not hard to follow instructions.”
“If their music is loud, then they shouldn’t (exercise) there.”
“Is the food court open or closed? If it’s closed then just let the elderly people exercise. They’re not vandalising anything or bothering anyone. With this same energy, please go and chase away the rempits on the road. Penang is full of them.”
“They are exercising. It is a healthy activity that should be encouraged. They are not hanging out there talking nonsense, smoking, and eating and drinking. They are not climbing ontop of the tables and chairs. Just allow them to exercise while sheltering there.”

What do you think? Should the elderly group be allowed to exercise at the closed food court or should they adhere to the rules and find somewhere else to exercise?
