When life gets you down, rise back up like this couple!

It’s safe to say that the Movement Control Order has affected the livelihoods of many Malaysians and it still continues to do so. Yusri Azis and his wife Nur Jannah Tan Jia Hui are both visually impaired and had their source of income cut off when the restaurant they worked at closed two months ago.

However, they did not choose to give up. Instead, this inspiring couple set up a Shopee store, Yus Bisnes with the help of their fellow Universiti Malaya coursemate, Fa Phong, in the first week of June 2021. Their store sold their signature Sambal Hitam, portion control plates, sugar-free sambal and stevia sweeteners. After setting up their store, the couple took to Facebook to promote it.

Not too long after that, a kind netizen stumbled upon Yusri’s post on Facebook and rallied support for them on his Twitter. The tweet garnered over 11,000 retweets and Yusri sold close to RM600 worth of products within a few hours.

As of 8 June 2021, the couple have since sold 82 bottles of their Sambal Hitam Pahang, three units of portion control plates, one bottle of sugar-free sambal and one bottle of stevia sweetener amounting to RM2,591.48 in less than a week.

Malaysians were simply full of praises for the Sambal Hitam and even urged others to support the business. Thankful for the support he has received so far, Yusri also made a video tutorial on how the visually impaired can use the Shopee application using an Android phone supported by the Talkback app. The video tutorial was even shared on the Shopee’s Sellers Facebook Group, Shopee Uni.

Shopee Malaysia’s Head of Seller Management, Zed Li said that the Facebook page was created a few years back to encourage a community of sellers to learn and share their knowledge with each other.

“It’s amazing to witness other sellers stepping forward and guiding Yusri on how to improve his sales. Yusri’s story is an example of how we are making e-commerce accessible to everyone.”

He also added that Shopee also organises an average of 50 online classes per month to train sellers on topics such as basic online selling techniques, marketing, handling logistics and customer service online etc through its free Shopee University seller workshop to enable sellers to optimise their sales on the platform.

Let’s do our parts and support this inspiring couple in whatever ways we can!
