Since the sentencing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Malaysians’ reactions have mostly been on both extreme sides of the spectrum.
Avid supporters of “Bossku” desperately pleaded for him to be pardoned while detractors have not stopped rejoicing at the politician’s imprisonment.
However, freelance preacher Ustazah Asma’ Harun recently said that they should tone it down.
She reprimanded the ‘happy’ crowd for insulting Najib after failing in the final appeal of the RM42 million SRC International Sdn. Bhd. embezzlement case.
Through a video posted on her Instagram, Asma’ expressed her dismay at seeing Muslims in particular insulting each other on social media with rude and disrespectful words.
“To those who were happy yesterday, it is enough to just express your gratitude without insulting the individual involved,” she said.
“The law has been upheld. We should not be happy about whatever misfortune that befalls him by saying things such as, ‘Serves him right.'”
“Some good things must have been done, do not deny it. It is impossible that everything is evil and bad,” she added.
She continued by saying that there is no need for Muslims in Malaysia to glorify politics to the point of antagonizing each other.
“There is no need for us to generate additional slander because of our dissatisfaction. The enemies of Islam applaud when they see us fighting each other while non-Muslims strengthen their relationship.”
“As believers, we cannot insult or be happy over other people’s misfortunes, especially fellow Muslims. It doesn’t matter who it is, not even the person who has insulted and slandered us before,” she said.
Consequently, Asma’ asked for the public to pray for Najib so that he can change and be a better person, and she is not the only one of this opinion.
Michael Ang agrees
In an Instagram post by local director Michael Ang, he echoed Asma’s sentiments of wishing Najib well.
“It’s not that I’m supporting him or backing him up, but since he has been sentenced, just let it be,” he said.
“In court cases, sometimes murderers can get away if they have really good lawyers and sometimes innocent individuals with incompetent lawyers can even be found guilty.”
“Only the person himself knows whether he is wrong or not. So just move on. Pity his family who has to read your malicious comments!”
However, netizens are not having it. They thought that it was absurd to wish a criminal well.
“Suddenly, it’s the lawyer’s fault. He committed crimes. What do you mean by wish him well?”
“I don’t understand. Do all these artists consume things that make them stupid?”
Both of them made some fair points there! It’s better to worry about our own lives.
