The majority of Malaysians are still discussing about Najib’s arrest days later. Starting with his allegedly preferential treatment in Kajang Prison and continuing with his escort to the court for the 1MDB trial.

Meanwhile, some are also perplexed as to why Najib returned to court in his suit and ties rather than in jail garb and without handcuffs.

Najib Razak

“No, Najib has no privileges”

The answer is rather simple and straightforward. According to Sin Chew, a practicing lawyer revealed that although Najib has been convicted and jailed for the SRC International case, the trial for the 1MDB case is still ongoing, which is the hearing that Najib attended yesterday (August 25).

The former prime minister is free to dress however he pleases as long as it complies with the court’s dress guidelines because he has not yet been found guilty in the case.

Liang, a practising attorney, informed his other clients that Najib has no special treatment.

A prison uniform is obviously required while you are incarcerated, but wearing one to court suggests that you have already been found guilty of the charge.

“Since Najib was in court for another case, prison uniform was not required as it will lead to preconception.”
