“It’s unfair to those on the long waiting list. The rent is only RM124 a month.”
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh highlighted the unpaid rent and water bills at the People’s Housing Project (PPR) and Public Housing (PA) in Kuala Lumpur while speaking to the media today (16 March). She added that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has implemented several initiatives to ensure that residents in PPR and PA meet their basic needs.

RM26 million in arrears despite a long waiting list
Speaking to the media, Yeoh pointed out that a total of RM14 million in rental arrears and RM12 million in unpaid water bills have been recorded across all 51 PA and PPR projects in Kuala Lumpur. Given these figures, Yeoh urged residents to settle their debts, noting that the situation is unfair to those still waiting for housing.
“Previously, roads around PA and PPR areas were only patched. However, DBKL has now implemented an initiative to fully resurface the roads for the comfort of residents,” she said.
“We hope that following the implementation of these various initiatives by DBKL, residents will settle their outstanding rent and water bills.”
Yeoh also emphasised that there is a significant backlog of individuals waiting to occupy PA and PPR units in the capital.

“We have a long waiting list, and it is unfair to those applicants when some residents continue to enjoy these facilities but fail to pay their arrears, even though the rental rate is low at only RM124 per month,” she said.
Additionally, Yeoh mentioned that she has requested further government funding to increase the allocation for road resurfacing works throughout the capital.
