Taking place at SK Sungai Tiram, a video witnessing pupils and teachers vomitting made its way onto social media.
In the 40-second video, it was explained that the cause of the ‘sickness’ was due to a strange odour in the area.
Here is a video of the incident. Viewer discretion is advised.
Acccording to authorities, a total of 24 pupils and four adults were affected by the strange odour.
According to the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Department Operations Commander, Mohd Salled Mohamed, the cause of the problem came from a nearby factory that irresponsibly burned sludge and liquid waste.
“When tests were conducted at another factory at around 6pm, we found a high reading of methyl mercaptan of 50 parts per million (PPM). The usual permissible exposure limit is 10 PPM.”
“We found out that the factory had been burning sludge waste and liquid waste in immediate bulk containers, which flowed into the drains connected to a river nearby.”
Let’s hope that authorities will punish those responsible for the incident.
