Two New Covid-19 Clusters Detected in Perak and Putrajaya, Active Case Detection Ongoing

Two new Covid-19 clusters have been detected as of 9 August, namely the Kurau Cluster in Perak and the Meranti Cluster in Putrajaya, according to the Ministry of Health.

Kurau Cluster

Two positive cases have been detected in this cluster where the index case (9050th case) tested positive on 7 August. The virus was then transmitted to the patient’s brother-in-law (9082nd case) who tested positive on 9 August after active case detection and close contact screening was carried out.

Patient 9082’s family members in Penang were also screened where five of them tested negative for the virus.

So far, a total of 115 close contact individuals have been screened, of which 106 tested negative while nine are still awaiting results. Meanwhile, active case detection and close contact screening is still ongoing.

Meranti Cluster

The index case (8968th case) of this cluster was reported on 31 July involving a patient who tested positive during their pre-screening surgery. Upon investigation, the 8968th case was found to have visited a health facility for treatment where the virus was transmitted to a health care worker (9083rd case) who was on duty.

Close contact screening and active case detection are underway where 15 individuals have been screened so far.

Meanwhile, the origin of this cluster is still under investigation.

As for the Sivagangga Cluster, a total of 4,636 people have been screened as of 9 August and 45 individuals have tested positive so far.

  • 4078 screened

  • 27 awaiting results

Perlis

  • 390 screened
  • 11 positive cases
  • 379 awaiting results

Penang

  • 168 screened
  • 3 positive cases
  • 85 negative cases
  • 80 awaiting results

Close contact screening and active case detection are still ongoing. Preventive measures such as disinfection and decontamination processes are also being carried out in areas connected to this cluster.
