The Cabinet announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was met with shock by some of the appointments that were made as well as the omissions of some.
One major Ministry which was present in the previous government but not in the current one was the Ministry of Arts and Culture which is normally paired with the Tourism Ministry but was no longer present in its name.
Following days of speculation on whether or not these sectors would be parked under a different ministry or if it was completely omitted, it appears that we finally have the answer.
According to a statement released today (December 8) by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, he clarified that arts and culture will remain in the same federal ministry as tourism.
“Name stays ― Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC). Decision made in the first Cabinet meeting of the Unity Government on Dec 7, 2022.”
In the statement which was shared on social media, Tiong also made it clear that he will always pay attention to all matters under the jurisdiction of MOTAC, not only focused on tourism, but also related to art and culture which are important treasures of the country.
He went on to thank industry players and related parties for being willing to give their views and thoughts to further improve the tourism, art and culture industry in this country.
“I will continue to practice an open door policy and be prepared to hold engagement sessions with all parties to ensure that the tourism, arts and culture industry in Malaysia can grow and further benefit the community and the country.”
He also mentioned that this includes professional, knowledgeable, highly skilled, creative and talented experts in the cultural sector such as traditional dancers, lecturers and so on.
“The contribution and role of groups like this are essential to bring our tourism industry, art and culture to a higher level, brighter and more magnificent at the global level,” added Tiong.
He also explained that he is planning to reintroduce the National Art Award which has been discontinued for a long time.
What do you think of his statement? Is it the best move?
