Well, after being stuck at home during the start of MCO, I’m sure all of us are professionals in doing nothing and fully eligible for this scholarship! 😛
If you think getting a scholarship is hard, well, you’re right. However, this German University would like to change our mindset on scholarships and our whole world view for that matter.
The University of Fine Arts in Hamburg released a rather intriguing press statement last Wednesday (26 August 2020) with the announcement of a one-of-a-kind scholarship. It’s called:
“Scholarships for Doing Nothing”
Open for application from now until 15 September, applicants from all over the world regardless of age can apply and present their ideas.
According to the application website, this scholarship was crafted because:
“We live in a time in which, instead of striving for success and effectiveness, it would be better to strive for a lack of consequences. What action might I refrain from performing in order to prevent my life from having negative consequences for others?”
So basically, instead of giving scholarship to someone for being the ‘best’ or for ‘a project’, they wanted to turn things inside out and give it for doing nothing.
Wow, who would’ve thought doing nothing could be so deep..
Specifically, the scholarship aims to promote the lack of ceonsequence and will be granted for doing nothing at an exhibition called “Schule der Folgenlosigkeit. Übungen für ein anderes Leben” or “The School of Inconsequentiality: Exercises for a Different Life” from now until 5 September 2021 at the Hamburg Museum of Art and Design.
- An activity they’d like to not do.
- How long they want to do it.
- Why it is important to not do the specific thing.
- Why they are the right person not to do it.
