OMG, I’m adding this place into my bucket list!
The Whale, a new whale-watching museum is slated to open in northern Norway in the year 2023.
This museum will be located on the island of Andoya in northern Norway. Andenes, a small town located in the north of Andøya, Norway is a major whale-watching centre because of its location.
With only a few miles away from the deep sea, the town is frequently visited by the migrating whales, making it the best location to watch this huge mammal up close, according to Dorte Mandrup.
Here is how the museum is going to look like — a soft-curved shell looking roof with a huge capacity underneath.
Designed by Dorte Mandrup, a Danish architecture firm, The Whale follows the idea of a minimally-invasive design. From afar, the museum looks like a rising whale tail.
Visitors will be able to walk on the roof of the museum, and the roof will encourage the growth of moss to help it blend better into the landscape, according to Bored Panda.
The Whale will also have a glass window from the ceiling to the floor, allowing visitors to look right out over the Norwegian Sea. According to AFAR, there will also be a tidepool and campfire surrounding the museum. Not to mention the exhibition space with artifacts, museum stores, whale-watching space and a cafe!
The Whale’s mission is to “create awareness and inspire the conservation of whales and their environment,” according to AFAR. When open, the place will become one of the best attractions in Norway, telling history as well as boosting tourism.
Camilla Ilmoni, a member of The Whale told Bored Panda that it takes about one hour by boat, from Andenes, to reach this best whale watching spot offshore. If lucky, visitors can even encounter orcas, humpback whales, fin whales, pilot whales, and dolphins!
