In grim circumstances, we may wind up being forced to create solutions for problems we would never think to have to encounter in our lives. Necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes, and this is most certainly the case when it comes to this brand-new hospital bed designed and manufactured by a Columbian company in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Designed to serve the sole purpose of reducing funerary costs while also mitigating the risk of transmission between medical staff and infected patients, these new cardboard beds come complete with a removable metal frame that will help support the weight of the patient, according to Japan Times.

Invented by ABC Displays in Bogota, a company that chiefly works in the sphere of advertising, the inventive new creation was conceived after company manager Rodolfo Gómez saw poor families in Ecuador struggle with the cost of burying their loved ones who died from Covid-19 in often expensive wooden caskets.

What makes this design all the more impressive is that the cardboard bed is apparently able to hold up to 150 kg of body weight, according to The Telegraph. The beds cost about $85 (RM369.82) to buy each.

However, there have been no mentions of the beds actually being ordered for use as of this moment in time, despite Mr Gómez pledging to donate 10 of them to Colombia’s Amazonas department, reports The Washington Post.

So what are your thoughts on this new invention?
