A big part of living in a country that is as diverse and as multicultural as ours is harmony, regardless of race, religion or social upbringing. After all, that is what keeps us all united among one another as Malaysians. As such, it’s important to note that every kind effort extended among us Malaysians can help create a sense of community. Sikit-sikit, jadi bukit.

One such individual is likely to be no stranger to the local charitable community; Uncle Kuan Chee Heng, or Uncle Kentang, as he describes himself as being. Despite being Chinese, he has done plenty to help underprivileged families of all racial backgrounds, whether it be arranging for school buses to take orphans on tours of KL, or offering funerary services to families that cannot afford it.

Death, while in itself an emotional burden, is also an expensive affair. So you can imagine the relief that Uncle Kuan can bring to many families with his recent charitable initiative, which is to offer full use of a funerary van (van jenazah) to Muslim families who need it, absolutely free of charge.

All the family members of the deceased would need to do is visit the mamak where the van is located, sign a log-book with their name and number, and they will have full use of the funerary van.

He’ll even pay for a full tank of petrol each and every single time.

This isn’t the first instance of him helping poor families plan out funerals either, as Uncle Kuan has done so for many families in the past, going to the extent of delivering the corpse from the hospital back to the families.

Facebook users have rallied behind Uncle Kuan for his efforts to provide for the underprivileged members of the local community, regardless of race.

To Uncle Kuan, we salute you once again for being the shining example of what all Malaysians should aspire to become!
