Chinese New Year is just around the corner and many people are probably rushing here and there to get things done in preparation for the celebrations as well as to get back to their hometowns.
But beware when driving or riding, for this Chinese New Year, road rules have become just a hint stricter!
According to a report by New Straits Times, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has shared that, for the next few days of his department’s Op (operation) Bersepadu, there are 7 traffic offenses (which we see on the roads on a normal basis) that will not be compoundable.
This means that you will not receive a compound should you commit any of these offenses throughout these few days, you will be taken to court instead.
Hence, without further ado, here are the 7 offenses you best avoid during this period (and in general, because why break the law in the first place, right?):
- queue-jumping
- overtaking on double lines
- running traffic lights
- speeding
- using your handphone while driving
- not wearing seatbelts or helmets
- driving in emergency lanes
Loke shared that this operation is an attempt to reduce accidents and accident-related deaths during the festive season.
“The number of road crashes in this country (being at such a high level) is not something new. The amount is still at a very worrying level,” he explained.
Op Bersepadu begins today (18 January) and will come to an end on 28 January (Saturday).
So, with that being said, don’t forget to put down your phones when driving or riding, do make sure you have your seatbelts and helmets on, keep to the speed limits, and please, don’t be that person who uses the emergency lane.
Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
