About a month ago, it was revealed that a whopping 3.8 million Malaysians had travelled to Thailand in 2023, making us the biggest nationality to visit the country this year. This clearly shows how much we love spending time in and enjoying the sights, food and culture in Thailand.

Well, it looks like the feeling might not be mutual.

According to a report by Kosmo, tourists from Thailand allegedly shared that they feel discouraged from visiting Malaysia due to less than satisfactory service and having to deal with bureaucratic red tape.

The President of the Thailand-Southeast Asia Halal Trade and Tourism Association (TAHTA), Aida Oujeh, explained that the level of hospitality and friendliness by tourism industry players in Malaysia needs to be increased to attract more Thai people to visit our country.

She also emphasised the importance of hospitality as there is still a high demand from people across 14 southern provinces of Thailand to travel to interesting destinations in Malaysia.

Malaysians agree that we’re not as friendly as we should be.

“It’s true, in Malaysia the quality of food is horrible and unhygienic, compared to Thailand where it’s more orderly.”

“Some Malaysian traders have grouchy faces. Let’s not talk about Thai people, even Malaysians don’t like it.”

“Malaysian traders are like that. They’re not like Thai people who always like to treat people to smiles.”

Considering how much we love visiting and being tourists in Thailand, it really shouldn’t be a problem for us to show the same love when Thai tourists visit our shores.

What do you think about this? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
