Earlier this week, photos of thornless durians have been widely circulating social media in Thailand. According to Coconuts, these unique durians can be found in Por Pala-U Farm in the beach town of Hua Hin.
Por Pala-U Farm’s owner, Siwakapon Rattanarungrueng shared that these thornless durians have been sold on his farm for the past five years.
“Customers come to buy durians to bring home, but the thorns make their travel a hassle.”
We suppose that’s true, considering how painful those fruits are to handle!
Apparently, Siwakapon de-thorns the fruits with just a knife, spending about five minutes per durian. Despite the increasing demand for durians on his farm, he has not increased the price.
Photos of the thornless durians suddenly became viral earlier this week when they were posted on the farm’s Facebook page.
Since the post received massive online attention from Thai netizens, the Facebook page received a lot of friend requests and suddenly became private not long after that.
Malaysians have just caught wind of these thornless durians and the photos have garnered a lot of mixed reactions.
Some netizens were welcoming of the innovative change to the durians, saying,
“Well, it makes sense and it solves the thorny problem.”
Others however, were extremely against the concept. One netizen was quoted as saying,
“YOU MIGHT AS WELL CALL IT A ‘BOTAK-AN’ INSTEAD OF A ‘DURIAN’ IF YOU’RE GONNA STRIP AWAY ITS IDENTITY!”
Dang, those are some extreme reactions!
What do you think? Are thornless durians the way forward or are they completely pointless?
