Every culture practices different beliefs and faiths. For some people, especially the elderly, they can be very particular about certain do’s and don’t, or like how the locals address it, the elderlies can be quite “pantang”.
Just recently, in a Taiwanese talk show, a numerology consultant shared her experience of speaking to a mother who has a very traditional lifestyle.
The mother travelled to another state to celebrate his son’s birthday and for the occasion, she cooked a pork knuckle dish. She was also aware that his son’s friends and girlfriend were coming for a celebration but she had no idea about what fate had in store for her during that night, which was completely against her traditional belief and faith.
The birthday celebration was a blast and it went smoothly, until his friends brought out a coffin-shaped cake, with some words written on it.
“Here’s to promotion and fortune!”
The son had no issues with the cake and the wish, but his mother couldn’t say the same for herself. She snapped on the spot and said,
“Why are you cursing my son with this?!”
Unfortunately, the mother thought it was a gift from his girlfriend and without questioning her further, she went on to slap his son’s GF!
1 of the friends who witnessed the whole incident clarified that it was not even part of the GF’s plan.
“She has been busy recently, so the preparations were done by his friends instead, and not the girl herself.”
The friend also said they meant no harm with the coffin-shaped cake. Regardless, the son wanted to be the bigger person and brought his GF home to his mother for an apology to de-escalate the situation.
Sadly, the apology did not work, and it worsened the matter even further.
“The mother did not accept the apology and wanted his son to break up with his partner,” the numerology consultant told the audience.
However, she did not reveal if the man was still together with his unfortunate GF. The other hosts, on the other hand, agreed that the mother overreacted by taking things into her own hands, and said that it was not right to slap someone else’s daughter.

In Asian households, never take a “pantang larang” lightly as some elderlies are very particular about the possible consequences. However, do you think anyone in that case deserved a slap for the coffin-shaped cake?
