Being a Malaysian without a proper Identification Card (IC) sounds impossible, but Syed Saddiq had a real-life story to tell.
In his Instagram post last night (September 1), Syed Saddiq shared the story of a 21-year-old Malaysian from Penang, Melissa Aurellia , who was born, raised and educated in the country.
“Her family and friends are here and like any of us, she speaks fluent Malay and can sing the national anthem. A Malaysian like any one of us.”
But here’s the thing. As Malaysian as Melissa is, she has yet to obtain her IC, despite her citizenship and IC number are stated in her birth certificate.
Melissa was supposed to pursue her education in secondary school but unfortunately, she did not have the luxury to do so, despite scoring good results in UPSR.
“She couldn’t enroll to high school due to not having an IC, so she had to start working at a very young age. I’m sad that her education right was taken away,” Saddiq said.
Melissa started working as early as 14 years old, when she should be safe at school, studying like the others. Instead, she started selling Nasi Lemak, flowers and others to sustain her living. Saddiq also said that Melissa is not the only one who has yet to obtain her IC, despite being a Malaysian.
“In Muar itself, there is a lot of people who has yet to get their IC, even after decades.”
No visit to the Residence Registration Department? (JPN)
In her recent IG post, Melissa shared that she had visited JPN multiple times in the past to enquire about her IC but to no avail.
“I even consulted with lawyers, but it didn’t work.”
Melissa added that instead of speculating, she hopes that Malaysians will stand up for those who are going through the same fate as her. She also hopes that the government will take the opportunity to improve and right the complicated system.
Fellow Malaysians, if you know anyone who are going through a similar fate, do share the experience!
