We all know that Malaysians are highly proficient in the English language (it is taught as a second language in our country after all), but do you know that our English proficiency and skills are one of the best in Asia? Third best to be exact!
In the 2021 English Proficiency Index, the latest analysis by international language training and educational travel organisation EF, Malaysia is ranked amongst the ‘High Proficiency’ countries in the world for the mastery of the English language among non-native speakers of the language. Furthermore, we are also ranked 28th best in the world in English proficiency with a high score of 562.
Region wise, Malaysia is ranked the third best country in Asia for English proficiency, losing out to only our neighbours Singapore and Philippines. Singapore in particular holds a very high ranking in the Index, placing 1st in Asia and 4th in the world with a score of 635. Meanwhile, the Philippines is ranked 2nd in Asia and 18th in the world with a score of 592.
The 2021 English Proficiency Index is an analysis in English proficiency by EF which studied the English mastery level of over 2 million people in 112 countries and region. In the latest ranking, the Dutch takes first place for best English level, with Austria coming in second and Denmark third.
