Independent analytics company specialising in mobile networks Open Signal today released its latest report, which benchmarked the mobile network experience in Asia Pacific, aptly named the Benchmarking the Asia-Pacific Mobile Network Experience – September 2024 report.
Evaluating the mobile experience of users across 20 markets in Asia Pacific, Malaysia ranked favourably in various metrics of the report, including having the 2nd fastest 5G network internet download speed!
Only South Korea and Taiwan’s 5G networks are faster than Malaysia’s
That’s the perfect place to start, whereby, according to Open Signal, Malaysia recorded an average of 295.5Mbps 5G download speed, placing us behind only South Korea in the ranking.
For context, South Korea is the 1st country to launch a public 5G network back in 2019 and is a global leader in the network, as can be seen by the country’s 427.5Mbps average 5G download speed.
In terms of 5G upload speed, Malaysia ranked 3rd with an average speed of 34Mbps, behind South Korea (52.2Mbps) and Taiwan (35.4Mbps), respectively.
Sticking to the 5G network, Malaysia also ranked favourably in 5G availability, placing 4th with 31.8% coverage, behind India (52.1%), Singapore (35.9%) and South Korea (34%).
However, we didn’t do too well in the 5G coverage experience ranking, placing 10th with a score of just 2.6.
Malaysia’s Reliability Experience and Consistent Quality are only average
Beyond the 5G network, Malaysia’s overall internet Reliability Experience and Consistent Quality are in the middle of the pack, placing 12th and 11th, respectively.
In terms of 4G to 5G uplift download, Malaysia ranked 3rd with a score of 10.3. For upload in the same category, Malaysia placed 3rd with a score of 3.7.
