Whether we like to admit it or not, racism all over the world still exists in this day and age, whether it is implied subtly or overtly. Recently, a Singaporean man, Terence Ruis shared his experience on social media about being the victim of obvious racism where he did absolutely nothing to provoke the attack.
As he said, he was happily cycling back home after paying his girlfriend a visit when suddenly, a van slowed down and a Chinese man shouted out the offensive phrase, “F*cking Bangla” to him. So rude!
As Terence is not of Chinese descent, the man probably thought that he was a foreigner in Singapore and meant it as a derogatory racial term.
However, Terence couldn’t do anything as he spotted at least three other men in the vehicle and he didn’t want to get into any trouble. After staring at the young man for his blatant racist remark, he decided to just continue cycling home but the man continued to provoke him and taunted, “Stare, what stare?”
Since he was still in shock, Terence forgot to take down the van’s number plate so he could not make any report.
After Terence shared his experience, he received an outpouring of support from fellow Singaporeans who slammed the racist man’s actions and commiserated with Terence.
However, one of the commenters disagreed with his encounter and said that Terence had taken the story out of context to stir up racial issues, and that they needed to hear “the other side of the story”.
While it is true that every story has at least two sides, one netizen shut him down by saying, “No matter what the cyclist (Terence) did, there is absolutely no reason to shout ‘f*cking Bangla’. Even if the other side of the story is legit, is it justifiable to shout ‘f*cking Bangla’?”
Spread the love people and stop racism! Since Singapore and Malaysia will be celebrating their respective National Day on 9 and 31 August, we should take this time to strengthen our bonds with our fellow countrymen instead and stay united! 🙂
