Following the turmoil that is the Jocelyn Chia saga comes a Singaporean comedian who knows and is looking to spread the true meaning of comedy.
With a simple but genuine apology (on nobody in particular’s behalf), she won the hearts of Malaysians and Singaporeans alike.
Sharul Channa took to her Instagram page to showcase a short clip of one of her comedy shows, where she not only apologised to Malaysians but also humourously reminded all of us that comedy is about spreading laughter and love.
She wrote, “Singapore-Malaysia. Stand-up comedy is used to spread laughter, happiness and harmony too. Let’s keep this union going!”
“For all those Singaporeans and Malaysians who came out to watch the shows at @thelemonstandsg to support Malaysian and Singaporean artists performing together. Today, @joannekampohpoh headlines together with @bibikpoh and the beautiful divas. All Malaysian and talented AF. See you all to tonight. Meanwhile, keep it light and positive!”
During her set, not only did she apologise (for you know what by you know who) but also made the Singaporean audience members apologise too.
“We are very, very sorry. Right, Singaporeans, are we sorry or not?” she asked the crowd, to which a collective “yes” could be heard. Not that they even need to, after all, it wasn’t them nor Sharul who made insensitive jokes about a tragedy.
To show how similar we all are deep down inside, she explained that should you cut the veins of a Malaysian and a Singaporean, you’d get the same thing.
“It’s the same thing running in our veins, Malaysian water.”
She also shared how, if us 2 countries ever need to ‘fight’, it should just be sports and even then, we win some and we lose some to each other.
“Southeast Asia Games, Malaysia, football won us 7-0. But, Singapore won them in table tennis, we (Singaporeans) got 3 they (Malaysians) got 0.”
“So, that teaches us 1 lesson, that Singaporean people or Singaporean men are better with smaller balls. Malaysians are better with bigger balls,” she joked.
