Little children can be rather mischievous sometimes and need to be reprimanded but this definitely doesn’t call for unnecessarily heavy-handed punishment. Recently, a kindergarten teacher was accused of allegedly pinching a four-year-old boy’s private parts because he reportedly did not want to take a nap.
According to Oriental Daily, the incident which happened on November 17 at a kindergarten in Kampung Baru, Sungai Buloh, Selangor shocked the parents when they found out that their son was injured. The father, 23-year-old Woo Jack Son said that he had been sending his son over to the same kindergarten since the boy was two and a half years old with no issues.
Woo would send his son over every morning to the kindergarten at around 8.30am and pick him up again at about 6pm. On that fateful day, he picked his son up as usual to bring him home.
Then, at around 7pm, the boy’s grandmother took him for a bath and that was when they found out that the boy was injured. The boy had complained of his genitals hurting and when they checked, they discovered that his testicles were bruised and his penis had some fingernail scratches. Wah, sounds super painful!
The dismayed parents immediately asked the son about his injuries and was told that he had been pinched by his teacher as a punishment on that day. They proceeded to text the teacher, who said that they would investigate and check the CCTV footage but did not say anything else.
The couple then brought their son to the doctor for a check-up, who confirmed that his genitals had indeed been injured by someone else’s fingernails. Angry, the parents went to the kindergarten to demand for an explanation and at first, the teacher denied any knowledge of the incident.
After that, the teacher, who was in her 30s, tried to shift the blame to another student but finally admitted to injuring the child when Woo and his wife said that they had lodged a police report with the Sungai Buloh police station on November 23.
When asked, the teacher said that it was a punishment as the child did not want to take his afternoon nap but did not explain why this method was used. Kind of an extreme punishment, though! The teacher also asked them to settle the issue quietly but Woo said that he had already hired a lawyer.
The disgruntled parents also made a complaint with Datuk Seri Michael Chong, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department and they held a press conference today. Chong condemned the teacher’s actions and said that it was totally unacceptable to use such a method of punishment.
“We wish to bring this case to light because we feel this is just the tip of the iceberg. There (could be) many more cases like this which are not brought to my office. Last month, we also had a similar case where a child was abused by his kindergarten teacher. Parents must also be more aware of their children’s condition. They must always check for injuries or marks and find out how they got them,” he said.
Although the poor little boy had recovered from his injuries a week after the incident, he was still traumatised and had to go for counselling. His parents said that they have stopped sending him to the kindergarten.
