Following the unprecedented severe floods affecting the state in December last year, Selangor has announced that a new flood warning system is currently being installed and will be operational by the end of this month. The new system will be able to predict areas that will be affected by floods and give out a warning notice 7 days in advance.
Announced by the Selangor State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Izham Hashim yesterday, the system will allow the state to to manage future floods more effectively. As reported by The Malaysian Insight, Izham further asserted that the 7 days advance will help to put rescue teams on alert for faster response in case of emergency.
Besides the new flood warning system, the Selangor State Government will also be installing automated system for waterway sluice gates. This measure allows for more swift action when water levels are rising as it won’t require authorities to send people to manually open water gates on site.
Moreover, the Selangor State Government also said that it will prepare more electricity generators for emergencies, given how power stations are always affected and prone to shut down when it floods. Izham stressed that all of these measures are part of the Selangor State Government’s review of the sate’s flood management system in response to the severe floods affecting the state in December last year.
