A man in Sabah fed his five-year-old daughter herbicide because he was upset that his wife wanted to return to her village with her children.
According to Berita Harian, the incident happened on Sunday (16 May) at Kampung Bundu, Kuala Penyu.
Beaufort District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Yusoff Zaki Mat Yaacob said that investigations discovered that the incident took place as a result of an argument between the couple.
The suspect’s wife had expressed her wish to return to her village in Keningau with her children, but the suspect objected.
“The angry suspect then gave his daughter coffee that had been mixed with herbicide,” Supt Yusoff Zaki said.
“The matter was only revealed to the victim’s mother after her eldest son who is eight years old, told her about it.”
He added that not only did the suspect spike the daughter’s drink with herbicide, he also took her upstairs and strangled her.
The girl has been brought to Kuala Penyu Hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition as the amount of poison she consumed was very little.
Meanwhile, the suspect is being tracked down to assist in further investigations. The case is also being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
Upon conviction, the accused can be fined up to RM20,000 or jailed for up to 10 years or both.
