The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) has been ordered to conduct investigations and take appropriate action following a viral video of a man dressed as a woman during an international event held in Kuala Lumpur on 21 December (Sunday).
The newly appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan, took to his Facebook page to issue a statement on the matter.

Religious Affairs Minister orders JAWI to investigate a cross-dressing man during an international event in Kuala Lumpur
He wrote, “The act has invited negative reactions from society and is described as challenging religious sensitivities and cultural norms in this country. From an Islamic perspective, the act of resembling another gender is contrary to Islamic law and should not be normalised in society.”
“In this regard, I have instructed JAWI to conduct further investigations and take appropriate action in accordance with existing legal provisions,” Dr Zulkifli stressed.

JAWI was also asked to cooperate with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to remove videos of the incident from social media.
