2 years ago, no one foresaw the pandemic, and no one certainly expected a high population to be “wiped out” by the virus. Now that we’re in the transition into endemicity, the repercussions of the pandemic seem to be following up.
Just recently, the Malaysian Department of Statistics released the information on the “Life Expectancy Of All Ethnic Groups In 2022”, and the results may not be what you expected.
The average life expectancy of Malaysians in 2022 is 73.1 years, and 10 years ago, the average life expectancy is 74.4 years. This means that the life expectancy of Malaysians is getting shorter!
If you refer to the table below, Malaysian women, regardless of race and ethnicity, seem to have a longer life expectancy than Malaysian men.
At age 60, a male is expected to live for another 17.5 years, while a female has a life expectancy of another 20.1 years.
Here’s a list of the average life expectancy of Malaysian men based on their race and ethnicity.
- Malay men – 70.4 years
- Chinese men – 73.5 years
- Indian men – 66.3 years
In terms of life expectancy at birth by state, Selangor recorded the highest life expectancy, with an average of 75.2 years, and Kedah stands at the lowest life expectancy with an average of 70.9 years.
You can refer to the full list of statistics below according to different categories.
Penurunan ? jangka hayat bagi tahun 2020 hingga 2022 adalah disumbangkan oleh peningkatan lebihan kematian semasa pandemik COVID-19.#StatsMalaysia#ARC2022#StatistikNadiKehidupan

The Malaysian Statistics Department also stated that the lowered life expectancy among Malaysians is contributed by the increased number of deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is believed that anyone who was diagnosed with Covid-19 is likely to experience post-Covid conditions.
According to CDC, post-Covid conditions may involve a wide range of health issues that may last for weeks, months, and even years in some cases. While we’re already in the transition into endemicity, we should all remember that the virus is still around us. Do follow the SOPs whenever necessary to prevent another outbreak.
Do you think the shortened life expectancy of Malaysians is only caused by the pandemic? Do you think lifestyle and food consumption also come into play?
