A rare ‘light pillar’ phenomenon was spotted in the night skies in Malaysia last night (August 25), specifically in Bintulu, Sarawak.
Going viral online, a post shared to the Astronomi & Sains Facebook group revealed that the phenomenon was clearly visible across Bintulu, leaving many shocked, with some associating the unusual occurrence with aliens, including claims of the presence of an alien spacecraft.

It’s a natural optical phenomenon that usually occurs in countries with a cold climate
However, astronomy enthusiast, Dr Zurwina Sharkawi, provided a scientific explanation for the phenomenon. She was quoted by Harian Metro as saying that it is a natural optical phenomenon which comes in various forms, depending on the location and the environment.
In the post on the Facebook group, which was submitted by Facebook user Kamarizal Kamalun, he noted that the occurrence more often happens in cold countries.

He wrote, “(This) usually happens in cold countries. The meaning of ‘light pillars’ is an optical phenomenon in the atmosphere that occurs when light from the sun, the moon and man-made sources (such as street lights) is reflected by small ice crystals floating in the air.”
“This reflection forms a vertical beam of light that appears to extend upwards or downwards, resembling a pillar of light.”
