Despite criticism and bans from certain Malaysian states, local movie ‘Pulau’ is making it big overseas.
So much so that the controversial film has now become the highest-grossing Malaysian movie in Cambodia and Vietnam.
According to a report by Sinar Daily, WebTVAsia’s Chief Executive Officer Fred Chong shared the news during a press conference, where he added that the movie had earned over RM700,000 in Cambodia since its release on June 22 (Thursday).
“It is amazing that Pulau has been a hit in Cambodia. With co-producers Filmfource Studio and My Way Pictures, we want to thank all viewers for making it happen.”
“The figure is indeed very high considering Cambodia’s population is only 16.6 million. Not all films in Malaysia are capable of achieving such a collection,” he said.
Pulau has also become the only Malaysian movie selected for the Cambodia International Film Festival 2023, as well as the top-grossing Malaysian movie in Vietnam of all time, with over RM800,000 at the box office.
Pulau first premiered in Malaysia on March 8 (Wednesday) and has since been screened in neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia.
Earlier this year, Minister of Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil shared that the movie’s trailer was not suitable for viewing and requested that the filmmakers release a new edit following uproar from certain parties mainly due to the characters’ outfits and behaviour.
