The National Rehabilitation Council (MPN) initially planned to reopen the country’s border on 1 March, only for it to be delayed again due to the spiking number of Covid-19 cases, as announced by Prime Minister, Dato Seri Ismail Sabri.

Sabri, who is in Cambodia at the moment for an official visit has revealed last night that Malaysia’s border will soon be opened again which will ease the travelling process, especially for Malaysians who reside overseas.

“We were supposed to enter the endemic phase in December 2021 but the discovery of Omicron variant in Malaysia had delayed it. Fortunately, it is not as dangerous as the Delta variant,” Sabri explained.

He also said that the opening of Malaysia’s border will be good news for Malaysians who stay in Cambodia. There are about 5,000 Malaysians living in Cambodia, and 2,000 of them are in the capital Phnom Penh.

“I know all of you are eager to come home. Some of you have not returned home for 2 years but Malaysia will soon open its door to the whole world.”

Additionally, he also reminded the people that it is time for us to learn to live with the Covid-19 virus.

“We have to accept it as any other diseases such as dengue.”

Sabri said the opening of the country’s borders is important because many have been affected by the closure since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, especially those in the tourism sector. The Omicron variant has not only delayed the transition into the endemic phase but also the opening of the country’s border.

As the restrictions are becoming more lenient, we would like to remind everyone to keep following the SOPs and never forget the basics – mask up and maintain the social distance. The virus is STILL here among us.
