Gurmit Singh, who is best known for his TV character Phua Chu Kang, has been fined and banned from driving after he was caught speeding at about 131km/h with his son on a road with a speed limit of 70km/h.
According to The Straits Times, the 56-year-old Singaporean actor was fined SGD800 (RM2,490) and banned from driving for three months. He pleaded guilty to one charge under the Road Traffic Act today (8 June).
The offence was committed on 12 April at 9.30pm when Gurmit Singh drove his luxury sedan believed to be an Audi A8 L along Woodlands Avenue 12 towards Seletar Expressway.
He told the court that he noticed a ‘flapping sound’ and wanted his son to hear it too, reported CNA. He said he heard the sound before picking up his son from his workplace.
“After I got him, I wanted him to hear the same sound, and I realised it comes out at 100kmh.”
“I’m not saying I should drive at that speed… but it was just a short spurt,” he said, adding that he was unaware he had reached a speed of 131km/h and claimed it was just a ‘one-off thing’.
Gurmit Singh later said he regretted his actions after District Judge Salina Ishak told him he had put his son’s life in danger.
“I understand, your honour. I regret doing what I did,” he said.
He also uploaded a video on his Instagram account, apologising and promising to do better.
