Apparently, Mat Rempits are becoming an increasing trend in Johor, as motorcyclists are starting to deliberately perform dangerous acts for the sake of content and to gain ‘views’ on social media.
According to a report by Kosmo, the Head of the Johor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, Superintendent M. Kumarasan shared that among the acts carried out for views include illegal racing, wheelies and the ‘Superman’ post, besides modifying vehicles.
He added that the group doesn’t seem to be slowing down on their activities despite getting involved in accidents and action being taken against them before.
“Due to the increasing Mat Rempit activities in Johor recently, we have carried out the Street Gangster Special Ops from 9 April to yesterday (18 April),”
“During the period, a total of 42 individuals were arrested for various offenses under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Those arrested were all between 14 and 53-years-old with special attention given to motorcycle groups that carried out convoys and other dangerous acts,” he shared.
His party had issued a total of 2,350 summons for various offenses with inspections made on 12,815 individuals and 10,035 vehicles.
“Of the total, 3,723 motorcycles were inspected and 208 of them were seized in accordance with Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he added.
Perhaps one way to cut down on Mat Rempit activities is to ban such content on social media so that they can’t get the ‘views’ that they want.
