As GE14 is drawing closer, Dr Mahathir is being scrutinized more than ever. It is hard not to make a wrong move as anything he does or says can be held against him, whether it is true or not.

There’s only a few days left before GE14, and yet, the Anti-Fake News Bill has Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad under investigation recently for claiming that his plane to Langkawi on Friday (April 27) was sabotaged.

Dr Mahathir claimed that just as his plane was about to leave, he was informed by the pilot that the jet was in need of repairing, which could not be carried out immediately.

Reporting to Bernama, Police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim had confirmed this.

According to The Star, he also announced that eight police reports regarding GE14 have been filed since the beginning of the campaign last Saturday (April 28), where two of them concerned political talks that were conducted in absence of a permit. One of them even involved the misconduct of fire.

He also reported three investigations, one of which concerned the Anti-Fake News Act 2018, and another concerned inquiries towards the police.

“For the case on the fake news, it involves a claim by Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) that the jet which he had chartered to fly to Langkawi was sabotaged last Friday,” Mazlan said at the Tun H S Lee police station after opening a crime prevention awareness programme.

Dr Mahathir said that he believes this was done to hinder him from filing his nomination papers as an election candidate at Langkawi on time.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Azmin Ali mirrored his concerns by commenting that the investigation on Dr Mahathir for fake news shows how desperate Barisan Nasional is.

“The fact that they are willing to go to this extent is another proof that the current government is desperate,” Azmin said during a political talk in Sungai Buloh on Tuesday (May 2).

The PKR deputy president also said that there is no need to be anxious that Dr Mahathir’s case will affect the chances of Pakatan Harapan at the polls.

“This will only strengthen our resolve and determination to fight Umno and Barisan and make sure we build a stronger Federal Government after May 9,” he said.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and private jet charter firm VistaJet carried out an investigation. They announced that there was no evidence of sabotage.

Datuk Seri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, Chairman of CAAM, reported that the jet could not be flown because of an air leakage from the left-hand nose wheel, which is only an insignificant technical flaw, according to The Sun Daily.

“The denial by the CAAM is not the result of a proper investigation, it is just a denial to say that what I’ve said is not true,” Dr Mahathir reported.

Do you think Dr M was really sabotaged? Or is it all just ‘fake news’?
