Yesterday (January 2), it was reported that the Malaysia Royal Police (PDRM) are currently in the process of tracking down 3 foreign individuals after a viral video showed them attempting to spread ‘Christianity’ in front of a market in Desa Setapak, Kuala Lumpur.
According to Harian Metro, the Wangsa Maju District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Lazim Ismail shared that a police report was made in regards to this incident on Monday (December 30), claiming that the trio were openly distributing pamphlets about Christianity.
“The case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code. Efforts are being made to trace the 3 individuals to assist in the investigation. The case is still under investigation,” he explained.
Are they really spreading Christianity?
However, many took to social media to point out an alleged glaring mistake in the case, that the individuals were not Christians but apparently, Mormons.
“These people may be Mormons. Even us Christians will avoid them.”
“They are not Christians. They are Mormons from the US.”
“Hello, they are not Christians, they are worshippers of the Mormon religion.”
“This is not the spread of Christianity lah. They have different understandings. Even Christians do not like them.”
According to History, Mormons are a religious group that embrace concepts of Christianity as well as revelations made by the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith. They primarily belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which considers Joseph Smith a prophet.
Despite embracing concepts of Christianity, Mormons have their own distinct set of philosophies, values and practices, and Christians don’t recognise Mormonism as an official denomination.
Mormonism has more than 16 million members worldwide.
