The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) statistics have concluded that tragedies involving heavy vehicles are happening every day, as 825 lorries were found to be involved in fatal accidents in the first 10 months of this year.
On average, 3 lorries are involved in accidents a day, which also contributes to 5,364 deaths compared to 6,024 throughout 2023.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director, Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri shared that these accidents involving heavy vehicles were part of the total 17,905 vehicles involved in fatal accidents from January to October.
“Of that total, 15,402 involved cars, followed by motorcycles (1,040), four-wheel drives (619) and pedestrians (19),” he said.
Additionally, he said that 38,367 traffic summonses were issued against commercial vehicles for various reasons from January to September through 4,822 operations nationwide.
“We have also seized 177 commercial vehicles, in addition to being aware of the increase in accidents involving heavy vehicles in recent times,” he explained.
Among the offences are lorries carrying dangerous loads, no tyre threads, non-functioning signal lights and non-functioning brakes.
“Small lorries, trailers and container lorries are the highest contributors to accidents involving commercial vehicles. We will not compromise and will act decisively to ensure the safety of all road users,” he added.
