With the position of Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman left vacant following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation, the President of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has called for an immediate replacement.
Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang urged PN to convene an emergency meeting of its Supreme Council (MT) in accordance with Clause 8.3(l)(b) of the coalition’s constitution to ensure the continuity of PN’s leadership. In an official statement issued today (11 January), he said the meeting should be held, among other reasons, to receive and confirm the resignation of PN Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, which took effect on 1 January.

According to Abdul Hadi, the call for an urgent Supreme Council meeting is aimed at safeguarding the coalition’s continuity, as well as appointing a new chairman to replace Muhyiddin, who is also BERSATU president and the Member of Parliament for Pagoh.
“On PAS’s part, we respect and accept the decision made by Muhyiddin and record our appreciation for all the services and contributions he rendered while previously leading PN.”
“It is hoped that this matter will be given due attention and appropriate action, considering that more than 10 days have passed since the effective date of the resignation,” Abdul Hadi said in the statement.

He said this in an official PAS letter titled Call for an Emergency PN Supreme Council Meeting. Muhyiddin stepped down after leading PN since the coalition was officially registered on 7 August 2020.
In addition to BERSATU, other major parties within the PN coalition include PAS and GERAKAN.
Following the resignation, speculation has arisen over who will take over the PN leadership, with names mentioned including Abdul Hadi himself and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. Abdul Hadi, however, has previously said he is no longer able to lead due to age and health reasons.
Who do you think should replace Muhyiddin as PN chairman?
