Recently, there was an uproar over a school charity event in Sepang that accepted sponsorship from a beer brand. Many believed that the beer brand’s sponsorship went against Islamic teachings and would promote alcohol consumption among the students.
Now, another school-level event is being condemned for its choice of venue, as the space, to a certain extent, promotes alcohol.
A Malaysian took to the Warga Kuantan OFFICIAL Facebook page to call out a ping pong tournament organised by the Pahang School Sports Council (MSSP) as the tournament was held in a hall that had beer advertisements.
He wrote, “MSSP ping pong. The sensitivities of Muslims need to be maintained too. Don’t use halls that clearly promote alcohol. Respect the sensitivities of Muslims.”
In the image showcased, the MSSP ping pong tournament could be seen in full swing.
The beer advertisements, which are not a part of the tournament but a part of the hall itself, can be seen right at the top of the hall’s walls in the background.
This has left many divided
Some believe the organisers should have selected a venue that didn’t display alcohol advertisements while others didn’t see it as an issue with it as everyone was solely focused on the ping pong tournament.
“Stupid. There are many other places to organise this. Why did they have to choose a place like this? Indirectly, they have promoted alcohol to children.”
“Choose lah some other place.”
“If they’re there to only play ping pong and not drinking (alcohol), is it wrong? Even on Facebook there are many non-Halal ads. But, it doesn’t become an issue. And yet, you are preaching.”
“When it’s at the MSSP level, the (competitors) are thinking of nothing else but the importance of their team winning.”
