Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has warned that local councils that don’t perform well under the “traffic light” grading system will face punishments.
For those who don’t know, the “traffic light” system is used to assess the performance of 156 local authorities (PBT) across the country. This evaluation system is expected to help improve the quality of public services provided by PBTs nationwide, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.

“Their allocation will be withdrawn”
Kor Ming said local councils will still have a chance to improve, according to Harian Metro.
He added that the assessments are still ongoing since the traffic light system only started in early May.
“To all the mayors here today, listen carefully. If you fail, I’ll submit your name to the KPPA (Public Services Department DG). There’s a clear message in that. If your local council gets a red light, your allocation will be pulled. If it’s yellow, we’ll cut your budget. But if it’s green, you’ll get more funds,” he said.

Councils with a red light must attend a performance course
Kor Ming also said that if a council gets a red light, the president (YDP) and the secretary will be called in for counselling and will have to go through a performance improvement course.
He said this after officiating the Subang Jaya Car-Free Day (HTKSJ) programme and the Design Competition (DIC) Prize-Giving Ceremony for the SK 10 Seri Kembangan Public Market on May 25 (Sunday).
