Despite the initial belief that only the elderly have the highest risk of being infected by Covid-19, a newborn baby in London has tested positive for it. Before the baby was born, the mother was rushed to the London hospital days earlier as she was suspected to have pneumonia. She was also tested for Covid -19.
Her test results came only after she gave birth and her baby was immediately tested for Covid-19 too and both of them tested positive of the virus. The team at North Middlesex hospital are currently unsure whether the baby contracted the virus in the womb or if she was infected during birth.
According to The Guardian, the baby is now being treated at the hospital while the mother has been transferred to another hospital that specializes in treating infections. The hospital has released a statement that said,
“The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority, so in following guidance from Public Health England, we are regularly deep cleaning the areas where the patients are cared for and staff who were in close contact with these patients were advised to self-isolate.”
As Covid-19 continues to spread, it is vital for us to practice proper hygiene as well as limit our interaction so we can at least slow down or stop the spread entirely. Be safe out there everyone and wash your hands!
