In today’s (12 August) live press conference by the Ministry of Health, a new cluster that is said to have infected more than ten people was identified in Mukim Tawar, Kedah.
The first case of this cluster (Case 9,113) is a Malaysian citizen who attended a religious gathering to commemorate the death of a family member between the period of 31 July – 1 August 2020. According to the report that was posted on MOH’s official Facebook page, there were about 30 people in attendance.
On 8 August, the patient started suffering chest pains and symptoms of fever. He immediately obtained treatment at a medical centre on 9 August and tested positive for the virus on 11 August. As of now, active case detection and close contact screening has been conducted for 86 individuals, including the index case’s family members, close contacts, hospital staff, and others. Of those who were tested:
- Nine individuals tested positive for Covid-19
- 21 individuals tested negative
- 56 individuals are still waiting for their results
All positive cases were found to be the index case patient’s family members who also attended the religious ceremony. Three of them displayed symptoms of the virus. The cause for infection has yet to be identified.
