With a lot of pictures taken for the Gram, it’s not really CNY if your social media is not filled with the #ootd of your friends. A local pianist and model did the same thing by sharing her #ootd for CNY, but a comment from a Chinese netizen will probably make many of us unhappy.

On the 1st day of CNY (January 22), Cathryn Lee uploaded a few images of her in the Chinese traditional clothes, Qi Pao, commonly known as Cheongsam on her Instagram. Many fans took the opportunity to praise her look and wished her a Happy Chinese New Year, but one particular comment has gained much attention.

Instead of wishing Cathryn a prosperous new year, the netizen from China expressed what he thought of Malaysia.

“Are you proud as a Malaysian? Truthfully, many of us think that Indonesia, India, Thailand, and Malaysia are poor and outdated countries.”

The netizen continued dissing Cathryn (and Malaysians) by saying that they only visited the mentioned countries due to the cheaper currencies.

“As low class citizens, why are you guys so proud of your country?”

As Cathryn has since locked the comment sections, many Malaysians could not respond to the comment. However, Cathry did respond to the matter via her IG story, which has since expired.

“I was just saying that I’m a Malaysian, and this guy dissed me.”

Cathryn also shared another IG story which shows a conversation between her and a friend from China, who had similar thoughts about our country. The friend asked Cathryn why has she been missing for a week and not been speaking to him, to which she replied, “probably a cultural difference“.

“What do you mean by cultural difference? We’re both Chinese, and you speak Mandarin,” the friend said.

Cathryn clarified and said that she’s just a Malaysian who speaks Mandarin. The friend then continued to persuade her to come to China, where he would help her to boost her career and save her from “the crappy” place – Southeast Asian countries.

“This is exactly why we can’t communicate”, Cathryn told her friend who continued to persuade her.

This time, Cathryn told him,

“I’m just a regular person from a crappy place. I can never be on par with you, who are an international level star.”

The comments about Malaysia and other countries were truly uncalled for. Each country has unique cultural elements that everyone can appreciate, and it is certainly not cool to diss someone, especially about their origins.
