Former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that Umno president Najib Razak will be stepping down.
According to a report by Free Malaysia Today, former deputy prime minister Zahid told reporters that Najib will not be staying on as the president of the party. This was after saying that former premier Najib will be chairing the party’s supreme council meeting today.
Najib just held a press conference announcing his decision to step down.
“UMNO political bureau has met and I’ve decided to step down as the head of UMNO and Chairman of BN.
“According to the principle, the head and chairman should have the wholehearted support and belief of the members of the party. With an open heart I agree to step down from these 2 positions according to the principle of things.
“Hishammudin will become deputy of UMNO and BN. Zahid Hamidi will take over as head,” he was quoted as saying.
He added, “I will not leave UMNO but continue to support the party. God willing, UMNO will continue to thrive.”
Two days after the GE14, UMNO celebrated its 72 year anniversary; however, it was a sombre celebration.
According to a report by MalayMail, it is speculated that Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is allegedly muscling his way to the party’s top leadership post through the wing’s state heads.
This is certainly going to be an intense weekend!
