Yesterday (July 3), a historical moment took place in Malaysia when the media and internet exploded with news of former prime minister Najib Tun Razak’s arrest.
He was taken by the MACC from his Jalan Langgak Duta home at 2.35pm yesterday, and has gone to the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex to face charges at 8.30am today (July 4).
I’m sure Najib was aware that the authorities would be arriving at his house, so he had plenty of time to prepare himself before the arrest.
Wonder what he did hours before getting arrested?
According to The Star, a video went up on his social media after he was arrested, meaning that he had pre-recorded the video beforehand.
In the video, he said that everyone is equal before the law, not just in the world, but also judgement in the afterlife. He said “no one will be spared, including top leaders in the present government”.
“To those that spread rumours and ostracised others, I accept that my family and I will face trials and tribulations (dugaan dunia),” he said in the video.
“To beloved Malaysians, if you see this message, this means that action has already been taken against me. I wish to apologise and seek forgiveness from Malaysians.”
“Malaysians deserve the best leadership. I have done my best but I felt that it wasn’t enough. Because I admit that there were many weaknesses.”
Najib added that the authorities had searched his residences, but insisted that the allegations made against him were false. He said that many photos and news reports circulating on social media were only rumours and some even slanderous.
He also accepted his defeat in the 14th General Election, but said that this had caused him to be exposed to slanderous attacks.
“Let the investigations take place first. I haven’t had the chance to defend myself,” he said.
“But I’m still grateful as not everyone has the opportunity to face such challenges. We all know that trials in the afterlife are much tougher. But, I will be strong when facing such challenges.”
Najib will be charged with criminal breach of trust and offences under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).
