The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has launched a manhunt for Malaysian rapper and singer Namewee, who is believed to have gone into hiding following the revelation that the police have reclassified the death of 31-year-old Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh in a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur as murder.

Namewee was the last person with Iris in the hotel room before her death.

A manhunt has been launched for Namewee

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying that Namewee, 42, has gone into hiding following the reclassification of the case and that the police have been unable to trace him thus far.

Fadil asserted,

“So far, we are yet able to trace him, and we believe that he has disappeared. Before this, the victim’s death was classified as a sudden death (SDR), but when we reclassified it under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder), he had disappeared,”

The Kuala Lumpur Police Chief added that the police believe Namewee is aware of the case’s development through media reports and social media.

Iris’ body was found in the bathtub at the Banyan Tree Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, where the Malaysian singer and rapper, Namewee, was also arrested with ecstasy pills on him.

Namewee was released on RM8,000 bail on 24 October for drug-related charges

Earlier today, Fadil told the media that Namewee will be arrested because he was the last person with Iris in the hotel room before her death.

“We will investigate the suspect’s and the victim’s movements from all angles. From there, we will determine if Namewee is the suspect or not. As of now, we have recorded the statements from the hotel employees and the security guards.”

Namewee was arrested following Iris’ death after he tested positive for four different substances and had drugs on him.

He pleaded not guilty to two charges related to drug possession and abuse in court on 24 October and was released on RM8,000 bail, and the matter has been set for trial on 18 December.
