First things first, Awww…
New mother, Emmelina, and a new gorilla mother, Kiki, shared a sweet moment at the Franklin Park Zoo as they connected over their little bundles of joy. The father of the five-week-old baby, Michael Austin witnessed the encounter and captured the tender moment on video.
Emmelina and Michael Austin visited the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston earlier this month ( May 1) with their son Canyon. While they were there, they stopped by the gorilla exhibit and got to see Kiki up close through the zoo’s glass enclosure.
Kiki the gorilla quickly took a liking to baby Canyon, gesturing and staring fondly at him for nearly five minutes. Kiki is a 39-year-old Western lowland gorilla who herself had a baby in October 2020. She gave birth to a 2.8kg gorilla named Pablo.
In the video clip, Kiki gently touches the glass while looking down at Canyon in his mother’s arms. When Emmelina puts Canyon’s hand up to the glass, Kiki did the same, as though she was trying to hold the baby’s hand. It was indeed a touching sight.
“When I walked into the zoo that day, I never could’ve imagined that we would have had that experience,” Austin said. “It was so beautiful, and we walked out just over the moon,” he added in a statement recorded by abc7 Chicago.
