The year 2018 is without a doubt one of the most eventful years in the history of our country, even if you put aside GE14 and all the ensuing politics. From inspirational stories of courage to our athletes breaking world records, it was truly a remarkable year!
Out of everything that happened, there must be one thing that stood out the most in the minds and hearts of Malaysians. So, we went around and asked fellow Malaysians about the things they’re most proud of and here are their responses:
1. One Malaysian’s random act of kindness

“Earlier this year, I remember a nurse who attended an injured man by the side of the road even though her night shift had just ended. Despite being exhausted, she went beyond the call of duty and stayed with him until help arrived. Kind and selfless, this moment defines 2018 for me!” – Veronica, Puchong
2. A Malaysian headlining a Hollywood blockbuster

“An all-Asian cast in the biggest Hollywood movie of the year with a Malaysian who plays the leading role? Literally Malaysia truly Asia weh! When asked by the Hollywood Reporter, Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding even said P. Ramlee was his idol growing up. Wah, we’re in the eyes of the world!” – Kylie Chow, Subang
3. The inspirational story of Suhazli Muhamad

“The story of Suhazli Muhamad, a UPM Masters graduate really stuck with me throughout the year. He never used his physical impairments as an excuse or deterrent in the road to success. What an inspiration to us all! The whole nation is proud of you, Suhazli” – Kamil, Gombak
4. The national team’s exploits in the AFF Suzuki Cup

“Of course the AFF Suzuki Cup lah! This Malaysian team has got to be one of the most talented squads we have had in years. Although we lost the final to Vietnam, I’m sure this team will reach greater heights in the future. Who knows, maybe World Cup 2022?” – Isa Izuan, Cheras
5. Ridzuan Puzi breaking the world record!

“I literally cried in front of the TV watching Ridzuan Puzi at the 2018 Asian Para Games. Such passion, such courage, such vigour! And when he brought out that Malaysian flag after breaking the world record? Never been prouder to be Malaysian!” – Ranjani, Klang
6. Our world-class health system

“As a medical doctor, there’s a lot to be proud of this calendar year. From the elimination of mother-to-child HIV and syphilis to a local student creating a mobile app to diagnose tuberculosis, a world-class health system is definitely within our grasp!” – Dr Khiddir, Kuala Selangor
Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows as there are certain things we could definitely improve on as a nation for a better 2019.
A world-class health system would be pointless if our population is not living a healthy lifestyle. In fact, did you know that Malaysia is the most obese nation in Asia? In fact, approximately half of our population is either overweight or obese!
Seeing that the new year is just around the corner, why not set up a New Year’s Resolution to be a fitter and healthier nation together?
