Last month, there was public outrage after local council authorities shot a stray dog named Kopi in Terengganu.
Similarly, a video of the death of multiple stray dogs has recently gone viral. According to the New Straits Times, a former Manjung council member has discovered dozens of dog carcasses, along with live puppies, were left in a pit after allegedly being captured and shot by local authority officers in Sitiawan, Perak.
He uploaded videos showing shocking images of the dogs, some still wearing collars, left trapped in a roughly four-foot-deep hole at a garbage disposal site. In the video, some of the puppies could be heard weeping, unable to escape as they were left to die among fresh and decaying carcasses.
Some of the dogs appeared to have been dead for some time, with newer carcasses also dumped in the same pit.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that there was also a new modus practice of a council where stray dogs are shot in outskirt areas and then dumped in mass graves.
According to a man who is an animal activist, he could even recognise some of the dogs, saying he had been caring for them over the past three days while awaiting their owner’s arrival to collect them.
As of now, there has been no statement from the Manjung Municipal Council.
Following the incident, the Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia has called for a standard national procedure for handling stray dogs by local councils across the country.
