In a recent post shared by @iqeenqueen, she took to Instagram to recount a troubling experience she had while visiting Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur at 10:30pm on August 12th.
In her post, Iqeen shared that while she was walking alone and trying to get directions from a random man, he abruptly and unexpectedly groped her.
She thought he was a worker at the eatery
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Iqeen explained that the incident happened while she was standing in front of a two-storey restaurant and searching for the staircase leading up to the 2nd floor. She mistakenly thought the harasser was a worker there.
While she stood outside, she asked him for directions to the staircase. He seemingly tried leading her to the staircase when all of a sudden, he groped her and quickly walked away.
“It turned out there was no staircase where he directed me. He tricked me. I managed to pull out my phone, chase him, and take his picture, but he got away before I could do more.”
She went to file a police report
After the incident, Iqeen initially hesitated to file a police report, fearing she didn’t have enough evidence and that the police might not take action. However, after consulting with a friend who is a police officer, she was advised to report it.
She went ahead and filed the report on August 13th, hoping it would help, but the experience only made things worse. She was bombarded with questions like,
“Why didn’t you do this or that? Why didn’t you stay with the man who groped you and call the police immediately?”
She pointed out that she would have done those things if the police had arrived just seconds after the incident. She also said she didn’t act because she was scared for her safety and worried the man might have had a weapon.
She added,
“When the police asked if I had posted about it online, I said yes. They scolded me for doing so and said they couldn’t help find the culprit because I didn’t have enough details about him. I only posted it online hoping someone would recognise the man.”
“Why would someone grope a petite woman like you?”
Iqeen then went to another police station to meet with a sergeant, but things only got worse. She revealed that, upon meeting him, the sergeant fixated on the fact that she had posted about the incident online rather than addressing the fact that she was groped.
To make matters worse, he allegedly accused her of trying to get attention on social media.
“I couldn’t believe it. I’m the victim, and they’re making me feel like I’m at fault and that the harasser is the real victim. I asked how women are supposed to protect themselves, and they told me I needed ‘solid proof.'”
She expressed her frustration but was told by the sergeant that he needed to attend to another case that was more important.
“When the sergeant was taking my statement for the incident, he made an insensitive remark, questioning why would someone grope a petite woman like me. His remark was dismissive and hurtful, when i confronted him, he laughed it off.”
“I just wanted to get it over with”
After an hour of waiting, the sergeant called Iqeen back to give her statement, but by then she explained that she was already exhausted and felt defeated.
Things took a turn when he suddenly became friendly after learning that she’s a musician. He allegedly started flirting with her, even asking her out for a drink despite her telling him that her boyfriend was waiting outside.
“The sergeant said he was glad I made the report because it gave him a chance to meet me. He even mentioned that he would come to my shows. His behavior was completely unprofessional.”
Iqeen clarified that it was not her intention to make the authorities look bad, stating that she believes there are good police officers out there.
In a recent update, Iqeen shared with WORLD OF BUZZ that despite how she was treated, she also wants to acknowledge that the sergeant has reached out to apologise if he had made a mistake. She explained that,
“The post isn’t about blaming anyone or any specific police station, but about raising awareness for women and encouraging better conduct from law enforcement.”
